Follistatin 344 - Educational Material
Source / Derivation:
Follistatin 344 is a naturally occurring glycoprotein predominantly expressed in skeletal muscle, liver, and reproductive tissues. It functions as a potent antagonist of myostatin (GDF-8) and other TGF-β family members, promoting muscle hypertrophy and regeneration.
Mechanism of Action:
Follistatin 344 binds to myostatin and activin ligands, preventing their interaction with activin receptors (ActRII/IIb), resulting in increased protein synthesis, satellite cell activation, and myocyte proliferation.
Clinical Relevance & Potential Outcomes:
Follistatin 344 has been investigated for its ability to promote skeletal muscle hypertrophy, counteract muscle-wasting conditions, and enhance tissue regeneration, with potential implications for sarcopenia, cachexia, muscular dystrophies, and post-injury recovery.
Intended Clinical Application:
Follistatin 344 may be considered in patients experiencing muscle atrophy, age-related sarcopenia, post-trauma or post-surgical muscle loss, or other conditions requiring enhanced muscle regeneration.
